Mortise lock or cylindrical lock? Short answer: mortise for main entrance, fire-rated and commercial doors; cylindrical for interior doors and tight budgets. Here is how they differ and how to choose for a villa, apartment or office in Dubai and the UAE.
Mortise Lock vs Cylindrical Lock – Quick Comparison
| Mortise lock | Cylindrical lock | |
|---|---|---|
| How it fits | Rectangular steel case fitted into a pocket cut in the door edge | Round bore through the door face plus a small hole in the edge |
| Strength | Heavy case, deadbolt and latch in one body | Lighter, smaller mechanism |
| Security | Higher – long throw deadbolt, multiple points possible | Medium – fine for internal rooms |
| Fire doors | Common choice for fire-rated doors (check the door's certified hardware list) | Only if listed for that fire door |
| Installation | Needs a routed mortise in the door; best on pre-prepared doors | Quick – two drilled holes, can retrofit |
| Cost | Higher | Lower |
| Best for | Main entrance, offices, hotels, stairwells, emergency exits | Bedrooms, bathrooms, store rooms, interior office doors |
What Is a Mortise Lock?
A mortise lock has a rectangular body that sits inside the edge of the door. Latch, deadbolt and handle spindle are in one case, so there is more steel inside the door and a longer bolt throw into the frame. It is the standard for commercial buildings, hotels and fire exit routes, and it takes a wide range of cylinders, handles, panic bars and electric functions.
What Is a Cylindrical Lock?
A cylindrical (bored) lock is installed through a round hole drilled in the door face, with the latch fitted in the door edge. It is simple, cheap and quick to fit or replace, which is why it is used for interior doors in villas, apartments and offices.
Which One for Your Door in Dubai?
- Villa or apartment main door: mortise, or a smart lock with a mortise body. See Smart Door Locks in Dubai: SIRA rules and buying guide.
- Bedrooms, bathrooms, store rooms: cylindrical is enough.
- Office and commercial entrances: mortise, often with electric release for access control. See access control systems in Dubai.
- Fire exits and stairwells: use only hardware listed for the fire door. See fire rated doors Dubai and door closers and panic bars.
- Electrified doors: choose fail-safe or fail-secure correctly. Read Fail-Safe vs Fail-Secure Locks, or consider a magnetic lock for swing doors.
Can I Swap One for the Other?
Going from a mortise to a cylindrical lock is easy only if you fill the old pocket. Going from cylindrical to mortise needs routing the door edge, so it works on solid wood or steel doors but not on thin hollow or glass doors. Read Can You Convert Your Door to a Different Lock Type? before cutting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a mortise lock more secure than a cylindrical lock?
Generally yes. The larger case, longer deadbolt and stronger door edge make forcing it harder. Cylinder quality and the door and frame matter just as much.
Which lock is better for a fire-rated door?
Whichever the door's certificate lists. Mortise locks are the usual option. Do not drill or cut a certified fire door without checking this.
Is a cylindrical lock fine for an office door?
For internal rooms, yes. For the main entrance or doors needing access control, use a mortise lock or electric lock.
Can a smart lock be mortise type?
Yes. Many fingerprint and card smart locks use a mortise body, which suits UAE main doors.
