Gate Barrier Buying Guide: Types & How to Choose the Right One (Dubai 2026)
If you're searching for a "gate barrier" in Dubai, you're really looking at what the industry calls a boom barrier or parking barrier — the arm that lifts to control vehicle access at a compound, villa community, warehouse, or parking facility. The terms are interchangeable, but the barriers themselves come in different types, and picking the wrong one means arm clearance problems or a motor that's underpowered for the job. Here's how to choose.
Straight-Arm vs. Articulated (Folding) Arm Barriers
Straight-arm barriers are the standard choice for most sites — the arm lifts in one straight piece and needs enough overhead clearance to swing up (typically 1.2-1.5x the arm length). This covers the vast majority of villa compounds, gated communities, and commercial entrances in Dubai.
Articulated (folding) arm barriers fold in half as they rise, needing far less overhead clearance. These suit basement parking entrances or sites under a low canopy. They cost more than an equivalent straight-arm barrier and are worth specifying only when overhead clearance is genuinely restricted.
Passage Width: 4m vs 6m Barriers
Barrier arms are rated by maximum passage width. A single-lane villa driveway or staff entrance typically needs a 4-4.5m arm (e.g. CAME G4000), while a wider commercial entrance, loading bay, or two-lane approach needs a 6m arm (e.g. CAME G6000). Going wider than needed adds cost and puts more load on the motor; going narrower risks vehicles clipping the arm.
Electromechanical vs. Motor Duty Cycle
For a villa or low-traffic gate, a standard electromechanical barrier cycling a few dozen times a day is sufficient. For a commercial car park or labour accommodation with hundreds of daily openings, specify a barrier rated for intensive/heavy duty cycles — the difference shows up in motor life, not the arm itself.
Gate Barrier Price Ranges in Dubai (2026)
- Compact 220V barrier (up to ~4m) — from AED 2,600
- BFT Moovi 30 (3m passage) — from AED 3,200
- VDS speed gate barrier, 24V (2-6m arm) — from AED 3,500
- CAME G4000 (4m passage) — from AED 4,200
- BFT Moovi 60 (6m passage) — from AED 4,750
- CAME G6000 (6m passage, high-performance) — from AED 6,300
Don't Forget the Safety Accessories
A barrier arm on its own isn't a complete, safe installation. Budget for safety photocells (to stop the arm closing on a vehicle or person), a flashing warning light, and — for unattended entrances — a vehicle loop detector so the barrier only opens for a vehicle in position.
