PoE CCTV System in Dubai: Switch, Cable & UPS Sizing Guide

PoE CCTV System in Dubai: Switch, Cable & UPS Sizing Guide

by Merac Dubai 29 Sep 2026

A PoE CCTV system in Dubai sends power and video over a single network cable, which means fewer wires, faster installation and a cleaner result. But many systems fail not because of the cameras, but because of an undersized switch, the wrong cable or no backup power. This guide helps facility managers and building owners in the UAE specify the network side of CCTV correctly.

What PoE Means for Your CCTV System

Power over Ethernet (PoE) delivers electrical power to IP cameras through the same Ethernet cable that carries the video signal. Instead of running a separate power adapter to every camera, one cable runs from a PoE switch or a PoE-enabled NVR to each camera.

  • Fewer cables: one run per camera instead of two.
  • Central power: all cameras are powered from the equipment room, so one UPS can protect the whole system.
  • Easier maintenance: a camera can be rebooted remotely by restarting its switch port.

Common PoE standards are 802.3af (up to about 15.4W per port at the switch), 802.3at / PoE+ (up to about 30W) and 802.3bt (higher power for PTZ and heated or multi-sensor cameras). Always check the camera datasheet for its actual power draw.

Sizing the PoE Switch or NVR

Count ports and add spares

Count every camera, then add spare ports for future expansion. A 16-camera site is better served by a 24-port switch than a 16-port one.

Check the total power budget

The most common mistake is buying on port count alone. Every PoE switch has a total PoE power budget that is lower than the ports multiplied by the per-port maximum. Add up the wattage of all cameras, then leave a safety margin of roughly 20–30%. PTZ cameras and cameras with infrared illuminators draw more than fixed domes.

Plan the uplink

Where the switch connects to the NVR or a core network, use a gigabit link. High-resolution cameras recording continuously generate a lot of traffic, and a congested uplink causes dropped frames.

Cable Rules That Prevent Callbacks

  1. Maximum 100 metres: a standard Ethernet run should not exceed 100 metres from switch to camera, including patch cords. For longer runs, use a fibre link or an extender/mid-span switch.
  2. Use proper copper cable: Cat6 pure-copper cable is the practical standard. Avoid copper-clad aluminium (CCA) cable, which has higher resistance, runs hotter under PoE and fails more often.
  3. Protect outdoor runs: use UV-resistant cable in conduit for facades, car parks and perimeters. Summer heat in the UAE degrades cheap cable jackets quickly.
  4. Separate from power cables: keep data cable away from high-voltage lines to limit interference.
  5. Label everything: camera number and switch port on both ends save hours during fault-finding.

UPS Backup: Keeping Cameras Recording During Power Cuts

Because a PoE system is powered from one location, a single UPS can keep the switch, NVR and every camera running through a short outage or voltage dip. To size it:

  • Add the wattage of the NVR, the PoE switch (at full PoE load) and any router or media converters.
  • Choose a UPS whose capacity comfortably exceeds that total, then check the manufacturer's runtime chart for the backup time you need.
  • Add surge protection on the mains and on long outdoor camera runs.

For SIRA-regulated premises, continuous recording matters. See our guides on SIRA CCTV requirements and CCTV footage retention and NVR storage.

Dubai Heat: Protect the Network Equipment

  • Install switches and NVRs in a ventilated or air-conditioned rack, never in an unventilated ceiling void or outdoor box in direct sun.
  • Use weatherproof junction boxes for outdoor connections.
  • Clean dust filters and check rack temperature during routine service.

PoE CCTV Installation Checklist

  • Camera count, resolution and power draw listed
  • Switch power budget exceeds total camera load with 20–30% margin
  • All cable runs under 100 metres, pure copper Cat6
  • Gigabit uplink to the NVR
  • UPS and surge protection sized and installed
  • Rack ventilated, cables labelled, network diagram handed over
  • Cameras and NVR approved for your premises category where SIRA applies
