Automatic Door Power Cut in Dubai: Battery Backup & Manual Release

Automatic Door Power Cut in Dubai: Battery Backup & Manual Release

by Merac Dubai 10 Oct 2026

It is 2 pm in July, the building power trips, and your automatic door in Dubai freezes half open, or worse, locks shut with customers inside. Power dips happen in lobbies, clinics, malls and offices across the UAE, and an automatic door without a backup plan becomes a safety and security problem within seconds. This guide explains what actually happens to an automatic door during a power cut, and how to plan for it.

What Happens to an Automatic Door When Power Fails?

Behaviour depends on the operator, the lock and how the door was configured at installation. In general there are three outcomes:

  • Fail-open: the door releases and can be pushed open, used for escape routes and public entrances.
  • Fail-closed / fail-secure: the door stays locked, used for restricted areas where security matters more than free passage.
  • As-is: the door stops where it is, which is the outcome nobody wants at a busy entrance.

The right setting depends on the building use and on Civil Defence and fire-safety requirements for escape routes. Always confirm with your consultant and installer. See also our guide on automatic sliding doors and emergency exits.

Three Ways to Keep Doors Working in a Power Cut

1. Battery or emergency power supply

Many commercial operators, including GEZE sliding and swing door drives, can be fitted with an optional emergency power supply so the door can complete a cycle or open and stay open after mains failure. Ask your supplier which accessory fits your exact operator model and how long it is rated to run.

2. Central UPS or generator link

For hospitals, banks, data centres and hotels, the door circuit can be placed on a building UPS or generator-backed supply. This also keeps the access control, sensors and fire-alarm interface alive. Your electrical contractor should size this properly.

3. Manual release and break-out function

Even with no backup, staff should be able to open the door by hand. Sliding doors typically offer a manual push or a release mechanism, and many have break-out panels for escape routes. Check how yours works before you need it.

Do Gate Barriers and Garage Doors Need the Same Thing?

Yes. Barriers, sliding gates and garage doors also need a manual release key or lever for outages. We cover this in our gate barrier battery backup guide. Villa owners with BFT, CAME, FAAC or Marantec operators should know where the release is and keep the key accessible.

Power Cut Checklist for Facility Managers

  1. Confirm the fail-safe mode (open, closed, as-is) of every automatic door.
  2. Label manual release points and brief security and reception staff.
  3. Test the door with mains switched off during your next planned shutdown.
  4. Check battery or UPS condition and replacement dates.
  5. Verify the fire-alarm and access control interface behaves correctly.
  6. Keep a service contact ready for call-outs.

After the Power Returns

Voltage dips and surges can stress controllers and sensors. If a door behaves oddly after an outage, such as slow speed, failure to reset or nuisance reversals, have it inspected rather than repeatedly power-cycling it. A planned Annual Maintenance Contract includes battery and safety checks so these issues are caught early.
