Speed Gates & Optical Turnstiles in Dubai: Stop Tailgating 2026
Tailgating — one person badging in and two or three walking through behind them — is the quiet hole in most Dubai office lobbies. Speed gates and optical turnstiles in Dubai close that hole without turning your reception into a bottleneck. This guide explains how they work, which type suits which building, and what to check before you buy.
What Is a Speed Gate (Optical Turnstile)?
A speed gate is a pedestrian lane with sensors along its sides and a fast-moving barrier — glass swing wings, sliding panels or retractable flaps — that opens only after a valid credential is read. Infrared beams track how many people pass, so a second person following too closely triggers an alarm or closes the barrier. Unlike a rotating full-height or tripod turnstile, the lane is wide, quiet and comfortable for staff carrying laptops, bags or trolleys.
Why Dubai Buildings Are Moving to Speed Gates
- High-footfall towers: hundreds of tenants and visitors share one lobby at peak hours.
- Premium image: glass lanes look at home in DIFC, Business Bay and Downtown-style reception areas.
- Tenant security: floor-level control works with elevator access control so only authorised cards reach each floor.
- Accessibility: wide lanes suit wheelchair users and people with luggage or prams.
- Audit trail: every entry is logged by the access control software for attendance and incident review.
Speed Gate vs Tripod vs Full-Height Turnstile
- Tripod turnstile: lowest cost, good for gyms, labour accommodation and factories. Easy to bypass by climbing, so not ideal for prestige lobbies.
- Optical speed gate: best balance of throughput, appearance and tailgating detection for offices, hospitals and hotels.
- Full-height turnstile: highest physical security for outdoor perimeters, power plants and sites with no staff supervision.
For a small gym, see our tripod turnstile guide. For corporate lobbies, speed gates are normally the better fit.
How Anti-Tailgating Detection Works
- The reader (card, QR, fingerprint or face) authorises one passage.
- Sensor beams along the lane detect the person's body and direction.
- If a second person enters on the same authorisation, the gate alarms, reverses or holds the barrier.
- Reverse-direction entry and objects left in the lane are also flagged.
Pair the gates with the right credential type — and consider encrypted cards, because cloned cards defeat any gate (see card cloning risks).
Buyer's Checklist for UAE Projects
- Peak-hour throughput: count people per minute at 8–9 AM and size the number of lanes accordingly.
- Lane width: standard lanes for staff, wider lane for accessibility.
- Fire alarm release: barriers must open fully on fire-alarm signal or power loss, in line with Civil Defence requirements. Confirm this with your consultant.
- Integration: compatibility with your existing readers, visitor management and CCTV. See our visitor management guide.
- Heat and dust: lobbies are air-conditioned, but entrances near glass facades see temperature swings — ask about operating temperature range.
- Cabling and civil work: floor trenching and power points should be planned before finishes are laid.
- Spare parts and support: choose a supplier with local stock and technicians.
Maintenance Keeps Gates Reliable
Sensors get dirty, motors wear and firmware needs updates. A yearly or quarterly Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) covers sensor alignment, mechanical checks, fire-release testing and response times, so a gate failure never leaves your lobby unmanned. Use our AMC checklist when comparing offers.
