Gate Safety Edges Dubai: Sensing Edge Guide for Automatic Gates
If your automatic gate has ever pushed against a car, a delivery worker or a child's bicycle before stopping, the missing piece is usually the gate safety edge. In Dubai and across the UAE, villas, compounds and commercial sites rely on automatic gates every day, and a photocell alone does not protect against every contact. A sensing edge is the contact-based safety device that makes the gate stop, and often reverse, as soon as it touches an obstruction.
What Is a Gate Safety Edge?
A safety edge (also called a sensing edge or sensitive edge) is a flexible rubber or foam profile fitted to the leading edge of a gate leaf, or to a fixed post where a crushing point exists. When it is pressed, it sends a signal to the gate operator control board, which stops or reverses the motor immediately.
Common types used with Italian operators such as BFT, CAME, FAAC and Nice:
- Pneumatic (air) edges: a hollow profile with a pressure switch at the end.
- Resistive (8.2 kΩ) edges: a conductive rubber profile monitored by the control board, so a cut cable or fault is detected.
- Optical edges: an infrared signal inside the profile that is interrupted when the edge is compressed.
Safety Edge vs Photocell: Why You Need Both
Photocells create an invisible beam across the opening. They are excellent at detecting an object in the path, but they only protect the line they cover. A safety edge protects the physical contact zone, including the leading edge and the shear points near posts, walls and fences.
Most professional installations in Dubai combine both, in line with the risk-based approach of the EN 12453 / EN 12445 safety standards for powered gates. For the photocell side of the system, see our guide on photocell safety sensors for gate barriers in Dubai.
Where Safety Edges Should Be Fitted
- Sliding gates: on the leading edge, and on the closing edge where it meets the post or wall.
- Swing gates: on the bottom and free edge of each leaf, plus any fixed point where the leaf passes close to a wall or pillar.
- Cantilever gates: on the leading edge and the counterweight side where a gap exists.
- Parking and compound gates: any gate used by pedestrians, children or staff on foot.
Dubai Conditions That Damage Edges
UAE heat, sun and dust are hard on rubber profiles. Look out for:
- UV hardening and cracking of the rubber after years of direct sun.
- Sand and dust blocking pneumatic edges or contaminating connections.
- Humidity and condensation corroding the terminal box or cable joints, especially in coastal areas.
- Cable fatigue on swing gates where the wire flexes with every cycle.
Quick Monthly Check
- Press the edge by hand while the gate is closing: it should stop or reverse immediately.
- Check the rubber for cracks, splits or flattening.
- Inspect the cable and junction box for moisture or damage.
- Confirm the control board shows no safety-input fault.
- Test photocells at the same time.
If the gate does not react, stop using it for vehicle and pedestrian traffic and call a technician. Do not bypass or disable the safety input to get the gate working again.
Retrofitting Older Gates
Many older gates in Dubai villas and compounds were installed without sensing edges. Most modern operators have a dedicated safety-edge input on the control board, so a retrofit is usually practical. A technician will confirm the board type, choose a suitable edge profile and test the stopping behaviour after fitting. Pairing the work with a service visit under an AMC for automatic doors and gate barriers keeps safety devices tested on a schedule.
