A fire rated automatic door opens automatically for everyday use, then closes and latches by itself when the fire alarm activates, so it still holds back fire and smoke for its rated time. How a Fire Rated Automatic Door Works

A fire rated automatic door is two certified parts working together:

1. A certified fire door (leaf, frame, hinges and hardware) tested for a fire rating such as FD30, FD60, FD90 or FD120.
2. An automatic swing operator in its fire-door (F) version, approved for use on fire and smoke doors. It opens the door on a push button, sensor or access card.

The operator is wired to the building's fire alarm panel. When the alarm activates, the door is released and closes by its own spring force, even during a power cut, and the door latches shut. During normal use it opens on demand, which suits busy corridors, wheelchair users, hospital beds and trolleys.

Important difference: a fire door must close on alarm to stop fire spreading. An escape-route door that is not a fire door is often set to open on alarm so people can get out. The correct setting depends on your building's fire strategy and approved drawings, and we set up each door to match them.

Civil Defence Approval

Merac does not manufacture fire doors. We supply and install doors and operators from certified manufacturers. Civil Defence approval is issued for each project by the authority of the emirate where the building is (Dubai Civil Defence in Dubai), based on the manufacturer's certification and the project's fire drawings. We provide the manufacturer certificates and data sheets your consultant needs and coordinate the installation and fire alarm interface.

Maintenance

A fire rated automatic door only protects the building if it still closes and latches on alarm. Our AMC contracts include a fire-alarm release test on every visit, with the result recorded in your service report.

Can an automatic door be fire rated?
Yes. A certified fire door fitted with a fire-door (F) version operator, such as the GEZE Powerturn F, Gilgen FD 20F or Portalp ISO F, keeps its fire rating. The operator closes the door when the fire alarm activates.

What happens in a power cut?
Fire door operators close the door by spring force, so the door still closes and latches without power.

Can I add an automatic operator to an existing fire door?
Often yes, if the door, frame and hardware are certified for it. We check the door certificate and label on site before quoting.

How much does a fire rated automatic door cost in Dubai?
